Super Dreadnought Axbet by Daemoria

REGROWTH

Battlecarrier Red Horizon, flagship of the Laughing Swarm. Docked at primary parasite bay, Superdreadnought Axbet.

The Mirror.
---

The command deck of the Red Horizon is a quiet place, with the gentle acid glow of diagnostics and navigation data filling the walls and ceiling. There is activity present, crew moving around the deck and interacting with the numerous displays. A young-looking crew member, dressed in the garb of a data systems tech quietly moves towards a figure pacing in the center dais.

High Lord Th-zho has a lot on her mind. It has been quite a long time since she managed to flee her pursuers in her home universe, saving her fleet. But the Red Horizon, her flagship had been locked into the hellish extra-planar dimension of the Mirror. The energies released upon crossing entire realities caused extensive damage to the ship's systems. There was still too many unknowns in dealing with the artifact that had become bonded with the ship she now stood in. It seemed as if luck had been on her side that Set, many many cycles ago, but its operation was still completely beyond her current understanding. Perhaps she would have to call upon its power again, but hopefully not anytime in the near future.

A tentacle lightly tapped her shoulder. Ah yes, the tech, maybe some good news this set?

: ?Yes:

:.Lord Th-zho, the regrowth of all primary systems should be completed within the Set:
:.Our propulsion systems have been repaired, the replacement parts have been grown without issue:

:.Tell the Superdreadnought Axbet it has our thanks:

:.Very good my lord:

: ?How soon until we can test our engines .I need to have my ship functioning again ...it feels like it has been cycles since I have last felt her move:

:As soon as the Mirrorgate stabilizes with that artifact, we should be able to transition out of the Mirror and test them, Lord .I estimate it should take only a ha-Set or two, if previous gatings have any consistency:

:.Good .If that is all, I shall be at the Silka hive .I need to discuss our upcoming shakedown sortie with our patrol fleet:

So I play a lot of Starmade, a ship building game, if I were to build one of these things, would you have any problems with it?

Sweetums! I was looki at a lot of your 3d stuff already, good stuff. Is there any dimensions (meters) you have? Or should I just rough it?

The Red Horizon is 1.7 km long. The Hammerhead destroyers are ...300 or so meters long? I'd have to check those numbers in c4d.

Oh buddy! Just to be kind to my mental health and my computer I will have to scale down from 1.7km, 300 is reasonable for StarMade, so I'll probably build 250 (fish for the Hammerhead) and around 500 for the The Red Horizon. I think my biggest build so far is just over 300 meters long and thats a frigate. Sorry just thinking "out loud" here.

hahah, yea no problem with that. It's one thing to make a mesh in full featured modeling programs, and another thing entirely to do the same inside a game.

Do show me what you create in the end though.

Absolutely! Even though I've got a galaxy worth of building to do I might jump on that relativity soon. Do you have any interior pictures of these ship types? or at least an idea you'd like to see?

I've not really done much work on the interior of the Red Horizon, and only one for the Hammerhead.

Red Horizon, and general inspiration fodder. An interesting touch would be to see how close you can get to the lighting in Starmade. Light has always been my favorite element to play around with, be it in 3d or 2d.

Your finest piece sir = sorry I did not get in contact sooner - this is an excellent piece of art, work and detail :)

I love the inner details - gives a sense of scale and magnitude!

Scale is the main thing I tried hardest to convey. It's sometimes hard to picture exactly how massive the supercapitals, like superdreadnough Axbet, is until you put other massive ships in their maintenance bays.

Ya, I also wanted to show the sheer vast scale of the Red Horizon, one of the capital vessels of the Laughing Swarm fleet. While it's a respectively huge ship, it is dwarfed by the superdreadnought Axbet, the vessel it's currently berthed at.

There have been hints of the Superdreadnought in other scattered illustrations, hidden in backgrounds and such.

I remember that ship now.  With out something to scale it against its a bit hard to think about how big it is.  Still a top notch spaceship of awesome.

Very nice. Loving the battleship style cannon turrets. Also cool to see organic spacecraft that dont look like big creatures

Square Cube law exists for a reason. Even in space, it'll put a limit to how large you can make traditional carbon-based organic beasties. :3

Fun Fact! The Red Horizon battlecarrier is actually a hybrid biotek/constructed ship at this point in time. The ship started out as a entirely manufactured vessel, but after centuries of service, it's had quite a few systems replaced with living biotek. The vessel's looks remain fairly unaltered visually, but it's got a very different heart from when it started.

Thanks LandeTLS for the comment. I appreciate it!

While not my intention, the connection to Homeworld is definitely visible. Shame that it seems to be the only 'colorful scifi' out there in common culture. :v

Yeeeessss.... more Laughing Swarm.  Also, more Red Horizon.

One particular nitpick, the Hammerhead in the foreground seems out of scale compared to the two nestled behind the Horizon.  ... let's just attribute it to the Mirror being a strange place.

Red Horizon dance party go!:flame: \m/:rage:

Heheh, yea. you got me there. If i were to re-draw it in scale, it'd cover all the delicious details, and we can't have that.

Blame it on the topsy-turvey non-dimensional reality. It won't complain.

Garryts, thanks for the comment and fav! The cinema4d meshes are invaluable for keeping perspective in line. I really do have to look into the NPR options c4d has, the basic renderer seems like it might be a bit too simple for my purposes though. I blame my lack of experience, and lack of effort in searching for solutions online.

(I'll tell you a secret. This image was just a composite of 'Quick Shading' and 'Hidden Line' screen captures. I didn't hit render once) :0

Which renderer are you using? Cineman?

That's clever - I assume at a pretty high screen resolution?

I used the standard enhanced openGL viewport display for the screen grab. This project was actually started over a year ago (sep 04 2014) so my workflow was sort of shoddy. It wasn't even a full 1080p res screen grab, because it started out purely as a concept study for the detailing on the back surfaces on the Red Horizon. Back Redhorizon Docked

Yess, the composition is the most important part of complicated layered scenes like this. If it's just a hot mess of elements thrown together on a canvas, it'll make people go 'blechh' instead of 'oooo'. :}

Yea, the superdreadnoughts are some of the largest vessels in the fleets of Man. Designed to carry entire fleets in their cavernous hulls.

Axbet here, is a one of a kind though. Larger than most, at 32km 'tall/long', and equipped with some supremely nasty weapon systems. I've been putting off drawing it in combat for too long. :(

At those dimensions I'd be putting off drawng it in combat too! Unless the attacking things were also rather large anything attacking would be like the size of mosquitoes XD
